ITC Vitale Giordano has gained great experience in the scientific-environmental field over the last 10 years. Students arrive from middle schools generally with a global preparation of medium level and often mainly theoretical. Our school has an economic orientation, but in the two-year period the scientific disciplines are fundamental for the training of the citizens of the future, who must be informed and aware of the role that environmental sustainability will have in the years to come. In order to interest and encourage young people to study science, it is therefore necessary to work so that they can be involved, becoming protagonists of learning. Our institute has at its disposal a science laboratory (regularly attended by all classes of the two-year period), in which experiences in biology, chemistry, physics and earth sciences are carried out. Our classes have taken part in more Erasmus plus with a scientific theme (on renewable energies and sustainability) and in recent years they have also participated in regional and national environmental projects and competitions, to develop scientific skills in a playful and stimulating manner. environmental. With our work we try to reach our students with the following objectives: to recognize and contextualize natural phenomena in the reality that surrounds us, to learn to operate in sustainability by not wasting the resources available, to know the rules of correct sustainable nutrition. To do this, teachers use innovative strategies: tools that allow you to work with multimedia (creating blogs and phone apps, videos) and methodologies such as the flipped classroom, augmented reality and cooperative learning. In the last 3 years, the first classes have taken part in the project “Avanguardie Educative” of the Ministry of Education, which sees the enhancement of students’ creativity in research projects in which teachers have the role of tutors. All this successful work has given our school a prominent place in the territory over time. We are convinced that the study of scientific disciplines with laboratory practice has positive consequences for students, in motivation and in the development of logical abilities. A greenhouse is currently being assembled in the school garden to carry out educational activities on plant cultivation.
Our school is situated in Akranes, a small town in the West of Iceland, about a 40 minute drive from the capital city Reykjavík. It offers several fields of specialisation, vocational and academic. The vocational courses offered by the school include business, carpentry, electricity, electronics, metal-working and nursing assistants. The academic fields prepare students for university entrance examination and it takes the average student 6 terms to complete. The students are about 500, most of them between 16 and 19 years old. About half of the students are pursuing academic studies and preparing for university entrance examination. The school employs about 50 teachers and about 20 non-teaching staff such as management, counsellors, librarians, custodian, canteen workers, computer supervisor and office staff. About 95% of the students come from West-Iceland, an area that has a population of about 14000 people. The school has a dormitory for students who live too far away to commute to Akranes. Our school prides itself on its service to different kinds of students and we have a department for disabled students or students with special needs. We try to integrate those students in general courses when it is possible and they graduate from this field (called Starfsbraut: Work preparation) in the general graduation ceremony of the school. Some of these students later graduate from some of the other fields and even finish university. Many of our other students have learning abilities, such as dyslexia, ADHD etc. All those students are entitled to service according to their needs, such as audio-books, private rooms for taking exams etc. • The school employs two student counsellors who the students can talk to if they feel they are being treated unfairly or if there are any personal problems they are struggling with. • We have occasionally had physically handicapped students and there is an elevator in the school so we can accept such students but we don’t have any at the moment.

There are many and important reasons that motivate the school and the teacher’s team to join this Erasmus+ project. The school educational development plan includes high-quality education and internationalization based on using of new learning and teaching methods and tools and opportunities for professional development of the teachers. We see that participating and working in a collaboration together with teachers from France, Romania, Portugal, and the stakeholders will give as many new advantages: -The first one is the opportunity to improve our teaching and learning activities and curricula. The theme of the project is interesting, there are many students with different problems: as time organization, motivation for the high results, difficulties in communication. All this enforce need of additional interactive learning that uses non formal methods for new habits building and that support personal development. The project will foster learning and will integrate using of technology, studying, playing, and learning. We expect that this will have strong impact on the pedagogical approach and student’s motivation will be reinforced for all aspects of learning. -The second one is the evolving partnership : in the school and between schools. All the involved teachers will be participating in the final intellectual output creation and realization. This new partnership will give a new chance to students to build new and important learning habits, to teachers (to compare again different teaching methods and to improve learning by providing opportunities in real world). We expect that students’ horizons will expand and their aspirations will raise. Working together in collaborative activities with peers in other countries, teachers will move beyond the textbooks and explore data, knowledge, and experiences in a direct and immediate way. This will help them to develop intercultural understanding and gain new perspectives. Collaborate online through eTwinning and other social media activities will help teachers to improve their ICT skills, linguistic and interpersonal skills. -The third one is the multinational team. Participation in this partnership will enrich all participants showing them new perspectives, different points of view, culture and education strategies based on ICT using. Multinational team-working will provide unique professional development experiences. It is a great way to invigorate the teachers collective. Thanks to the project students will be able to learn effortlessly and with joy build their own new personality. -The fourth one is the opportunity to use English. Participating in different project activities teachers will have real opportunity to improve their lexica and oral speaking in English. Acquiring new competences will be contributed to personal and professional development. -The fifth one is the results that we will receive. The school profile will rise. The school is ambitious with bold expectations for students and staff. The school board wants well prepared graduated students. This project will help the teachers to build up the basic habits for success and to give the advantage in life of the students. The final product will be implementing the new ways of working in the classroom and will help student’s evaluation in different subjects and different levels.
