During the meeting in Iceland we will mostly be exploring agriculture and sustainability in food production but of course we will also visit some of the Icelandic geothermal plants and famous sites.
In Akranes, where the meeting takes place, we will of course get to know the school and the town as well as visiting a kindergarten which emphasises sustainability and environmental topics.
We will visit the agricultural college in Hvanneyri where we will be introduced to modern agriculture and how we can adapt this to modern ideas of sustainability.
We will visit the geothermal hot spring of Deildartunguhver which is the highest-flowing hot spring in Europe and is widely known for its rapid flow rate of 180 litres (380 pints) per second. By the hot spring there are natural pools and participants are invited to enjoy those as well.
Another day trip is on the so called Golden Circle where we will visit the national park of Þingvellir – he birthplace of Iceland as a nation, and home to the oldest ongoing parliament in the world. In the boundaries of this unique national park, the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates drift away from each other. We will also visit Geysir sometimes known as The Great Geysir, is a geyser in southwestern Iceland. It was the first geyser described in a printed source and the first known to modern Europeans and the beautiful waterfall of Gullfoss.
Another excursion takes us to the sustainable community of Sólheimar where we will get to know the activities of the inhabitants (mostly disabled people) and have a look around the greenhouses. Finally we will visit the Hellisheiði geothermal power plant and get a presentation on that.
